What is a HSI? AANAPISI? MSI?

UIC has long been one of the move diverse universities in the USA. In 2010 we elevated our diverse status to earning recognition as an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution or AANAPISI. The first in the Midwest. Not one to rest on our laurels, in 2014 UIC earned recognition as Hispanic Serving Institution.

According to the U.S. Department of Education:

An Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) is defined as an institution of higher education that --

  • is an eligible institution; and
  • has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent 0 percent Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application.

A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is defined as an institution of higher education that—

  • is an eligible institution; and
  • has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application.

At UIC, we have surpassed this baselines - our fall  2023 enrollment saw more than 18 percent of our undergraduate students identify as Asian and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander and 29% Hispanic/Latino/a/x. Our MSI mission is to push past counting bodies to provide a culturally enhancing educational experience.
